Brussels: An additional EUR 1 million in funding was allocated to support humanitarian efforts in Sudan, amid growing humanitarian needs following the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)'s takeover of El Fasher in North Darfur, which caused a mass displacement of civilians fleeing violence, announced the European Union (EU) on Tuesday.
According to Kuwait News Agency, EU Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality, Hadja Lahbib, stated that the humanitarian situation in Sudan has reached a critical level. She highlighted credible reports confirming that the RSF has committed "mass atrocities, ranging from ethnically motivated killings to systematic violence." Lahbib stressed that, "Sudan is bleeding, but the EU will not stand by and watch." This new funding will contribute to strengthening the emergency response in North Darfur, particularly in Tawila locality, which hosts the largest number of internally displaced persons in the country.
The aid will also be directed toward providing water, sanitation, and hygiene services, as well as emergency shelter for families fleeing El Fasher.
This new funding comes on top of more than EUR 272 million provided by the EU during 2025 to offer humanitarian assistance to those affected inside Sudan as well as to Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries.
