Brussels: The European Commission on Monday called for the inclusion of Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado in the country's transitional phase, following the U.S. arrest of President Nicolas Maduro. EU Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper emphasized the need for a democratic transition that involves key figures like Edmundo Gonzalez, recognized by the Venezuelan opposition as the winner of the 2024 presidential election, and Machado.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Hipper reaffirmed the European Union's support for an inclusive political process in Venezuela. The EU stresses the importance of dialogue and broad participation by all essential parties to ensure a peaceful democratic transition that aligns with the aspirations of the Venezuelan people.
In contrast, US President Donald Trump expressed skepticism about Machado's leadership potential during a Saturday press conference following Maduro's arrest. Trump remarked, "I think it will be very difficult for her to be the leader. She does not have support or respect within the country," while also noting, "She is a very nice woman, but she is not respected."
The situation in Venezuela remains complex, with international stakeholders advocating for a resolution that includes diverse political voices to navigate the country's path forward.
