Environment Minister: We hope that the international community will double support for Iraq in facing the problems of climate change

The Minister of Environment, Nizar Amidi, expressed his hope that the international community, especially Canada, would double the provision of cooperation and support to Iraq in facing the problems of climate change and drought.

A statement by the Ministry of Environment stated that the Minister received, today, Monday, Canadian Ambassador Gregory Galligan, and discussed with him frameworks for cooperation in the file of climate change and the water crisis.

The Minister indicated, according to the statement, the government’s great interest in developing solutions and remedies for the effects of climate change and water scarcity, and proceeding with the implementation of important strategic projects in modern technology, the exploitation of associated gas and the reduction of emissions to reach a reduction in emissions within the Iraqi National Contributions Document by 2030.

He added that “they discussed joint cooperation in facing the effects of climate change, sustainable agriculture and green technology, discussing the causes facing the water sector in the country, and investing in Iraq’s participation in the COP 28 conference that will be held during this year in Dubai,” stressing that “Iraq’s participation will be effective in proposing the issue of the Iraqi environmental situation on the international community.

For his part, the Canadian Ambassador expressed his “high appreciation for what the Iraqi government is doing through its programs and projects at the Iraq Climate Conference and its active interest in the environmental sector,” pointing to “the importance of supporting Iraq in confronting climate change.”
