Electricity Ministry Achieves Milestone in Managing Summer Energy Demand

Kuwait city: The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has achieved an unprecedented accomplishment in managing energy demand, as the maximum load reached 17,610 MW during this summer, according to Minister Sabeeh Al-Mukhaizeem on Saturday.

According to Kuwait News Agency, this summer saw a decline of 30 MW in demand compared to the summer of 2024, despite an anticipated annual load increase of 4 percent. Minister Al-Mukhaizeem, who also serves as Acting Finance Minister and Minister of State for Economic and Investment Affairs, emphasized that this reduction in electricity consumption is a significant indicator of successful national efforts, especially considering the country's temperature reached 51 degrees Celsius, coupled with a growing population.

The achievement was attributed to integrated strategic planning in the ministry's load department and rigorous campaigns against overconsumption. These steps were implemented using high technical and engineering standards, along with the latest techniques in monitoring and follow-up, ensuring the sustainable efficiency of the electricity network and enhancing its capacity.

Minister Al-Mukhaizeem praised the collaboration among ministries, state agencies, political leadership, and the government's substantial support. The ministry is focused not only on addressing current challenges but also on building robust future capacity. It aims to implement large-scale electricity and water production projects, targeting 14,050 MW of electricity and 228 million imperial gallons of fresh water per day by 2031.

Significant progress has been made, including signing a commitment document for the second and third phases of the Al-Zour North Power Plant project, with a capacity of 2,700 MW, in cooperation with the Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP) and a consortium of ACWA Power and the Gulf Investment Corporation.

Regarding the Shagaya Renewable Energy Project, the minister highlighted its significance as one of the country's vital projects. The first phase, with a capacity of 1,100 MW, was launched by the Public-Private Partnership Projects Authority last June. He reiterated that the ministry is committed to ensuring Kuwait's electrical and water future through several major upcoming projects, including the 7,200-capacity Al-Nuwaiseeb project.
