Egyptian Parliament Elects Hisham Badawi as New Speaker

Cairo: The Egyptian House of Representatives on Monday elected Counsellor Hisham Badawi as its speaker during the house's opening session for the new legislative term. Badawi secured a substantial majority, winning 521 out of a total 570 votes.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Badawi addressed the parliament emphasizing the role of the legislative body as a foundation for legislative reforms. He committed to completing the legislative infrastructure that ensures safety and welfare, prioritizing the interests of citizens. Badawi highlighted that the parliament would maintain a regulatory role to achieve the objectives that align with the interests of the Egyptian people with balanced objectivity. He urged all MPs to actively participate in this mission and utilize supervisory parliamentary tools effectively.

Egypt's 2025 parliamentary elections were conducted in two phases over 99 days, starting from 7 November 2025 and concluding on 10 January 2026.
