Clashes between Sudan’s army, Rapid Support Forces escalate

Clashes between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary escalated in the capital Khartoum, as the army used fighter jets and tanks.

The Sudanese army said in a statement Saturday that its airforce is executing military operations against the paramilitary militias in response to their “irresponsible” actions. The army still controls all airports and airbases, unlike what the forces claim, the statement added.

On its part, the Rapid Support Forces said in a statement that they took over the presidential palace, headquaters of the army’s commander, Khartoum International Airport and other airports.

Meanwhile, Al-Hadi Idris, Sudan’s civil forces member, tasked with de-escalating tension between the two sides and member of the Sovereign Council, called on both sides to refrain from violence and urged them to engage in dialogue.

Clashes broke out between the two sides as talks aiming to reach a final political agreement had recently failed. The agreement was supposed to allow the Rapid Support Forces to merge into the Sudanese army and form a civil government.
