Beijing: China announced on Sunday it is taking measures against medical devices imported from the European Union (EU). According to Kuwait News Agency, Xinhua news agency quoted China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) as stating that this decision follows the EU's introduction of measures that restrict Chinese companies and products from participating in its public procurement of medical devices in June. China has expressed its readiness to resolve these differences through consultation, including bilateral government procurement arrangements, yet found it necessary to adopt reciprocal measures to safeguard its interests. MOFCOM emphasized that these measures aim to protect the legitimate rights of Chinese enterprises and ensure a fair competitive environment. The restrictions specifically target medical device products imported from the EU, and will not affect products manufactured in China by EU-invested enterprises. This distinction highlights China's intention to maintain a balanced trade environment wh ile addressing its concerns. The EU's decision, taken on June 2, involved barring Chinese companies from participating in public procurement tenders for contracts exceeding 5 million euros (USD 5.7 million). This move was a response to perceived trade discrimination by Beijing against European companies.
