Beijing: China on Friday expressed alarm at recent "military and security developments" in Japan and urged Tokyo to stop justifying expansion of military armament. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Li Jian said at a news conference Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, during her recent address to the Japanese parliament, refrained from replying to MPs' questions whether Japan remained committed to abstaining from possession, production or importing nuclear arms.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Jian said the Japanese prime minister's stand and hints that had been made by the Japanese defense minister as to studies to acquire nuclear-powered submarines revealed "major transformation" in Tokyo's policy. He added that Japan largely modified its security policy over the past years, increasing military spending, cutting constraints on arms exports and seeking to stockpile on offensive weapons.
Jian added that the remarks by the Japanese prime minister on possible military intervention in the Taiwanese issue cast doubts over Tokyo's purported peaceful development strategy.
