British ONS: Unemployment Rates Highest in 5 Years at 5.2 Pct

London: Unemployment rates in Britain rose to 5.2 percent in the last three months to December of 2025, up from 5.1 percent in the three months to November, the highest rate in nearly five years, said the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Tuesday.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the ONS added that those unemployed are now actively looking for a job in a market with a "weak hiring activity" in accordance with the released figures. The rate was attributed to increased redundancies, a new post-pandemic high in the number of unemployed people per job vacancy, and the impact of the Employment Rights Act on workers' rights and hiring practices.

The UK's current rate of inflation is at 3.6 percent, which affects wages and job availability and also leads to higher living costs, including housing and food costs.
