BRICS Leaders Adopt Declaration at 17th Summit Focusing on Global Governance Reform

Rio de janeiro: At the conclusion of the 17th BRICS Summit, held under the theme "Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance," leaders adopted a comprehensive declaration in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The summit gathered heads of state to discuss pivotal issues, such as reforming global governance, trade cooperation, climate change, and cultural development.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva emphasized the necessity for BRICS to drive the renewal of global governance to align with the 21st century's multipolar reality. Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the growing authority and influence of BRICS, underscoring the group's extensive political, economic, scientific, technological, and human potential. He expressed optimism that the summit's declaration would pave the way for future collaborations rooted in equal cooperation.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pointed out that BRICS' expansion and the inclusion of new partners demonstrate the group's adaptability and called for similar reforms in institutions like the UN Security Council and the WTO. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa echoed these sentiments, noting that BRICS' expansion offers new avenues for trade, technological exchange, and green economy cooperation. He also stressed South Africa's commitment to implementing the BRICS strategy to combat terrorism.

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly outlined key cooperation areas, including economic integration, energy, infrastructure, and financial collaboration through settlements in national currencies. The summit also focused on artificial intelligence (AI), with leaders agreeing on the BRICS Leaders' Statement on the Global Governance of AI to promote responsible AI development for sustainable growth.

The declaration also condemned the April 2025 terrorist attack in India, urging the UN to finalize a comprehensive convention on international terrorism. Additionally, member countries committed to advancing the BRICS Grain Exchange initiative, establishing the BRICS Space Council, and supporting India's upcoming presidency and hosting of the 18th BRICS summit in 2026.
