Ramallah: A German diplomat has expressed Berlin’s readiness to co-sponsor with Egypt holding an international conference for Gaza’s recovery and reconstruction. The German representative in Ramallah, Anke Schlimm, made the remarks during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the Palestinian Presidency headquarters in Ramallah.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Schlimm briefed President Abbas about her nation’s support for peace and Berlin’s efforts to silence the guns in the region while providing relief aid to Palestinians in need. WAFA quoted Schlimm as affirming the necessity for the Palestinian Authority to play a prime role in governing and security, with Arab-international backup, in the Palestinian territories.
The German diplomat relayed her government’s readiness to co-sponsor with Egypt organizing an international conference for the recovery and reconstruction of Gaza, while affirming that the Palestinian government should play a role in the postwar period. For his part, Abbas lauded the German humanitarian assistance, programs for backing Palestinian institutions, and Berlin’s prominent role in supporting peace and stability in the region.
Abbas has repeatedly stated that the Palestinian Authority is the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and has expressed a desire to play a key role in the post-war period in Gaza. There are also reports about talks among the Palestinian factions on how to govern Gaza in the future.
