Darjeeling: At least 20 people were killed in Darjeeling district of West Bengal following incessant rains and landslides.
According to Kuwait News Agency, more than 20 people lost their lives due to incessant rainfall and landslides since yesterday evening in Gorkhaland Territorial Administration in North Bengal. Mirik, Kurseong, Rangbhang, and Pul Bazaar areas were hit by incessant rains. Kalimpong Hill District and surrounding areas also witnessed heavy rainfall and landslides, leaving behind a trail of devastation. Vehicular movements were disrupted as Teesta River is flowing above the National Highway at several places.
The national highway connecting Siliguri Sikkim has been closed at several places. Out of the 20 dead, 13 people have tragically lost their lives in Mirik Subdivision, while six people lost their lives in Sukhia Pokhri of Darjeeling Subdivision, and Bijanbari has confirmed one fatality. The heavy rainfall swept away homes, farmlands, and entire livelihoods at many places. Local authorities are carrying out rescue and relief works. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of life in Darjeeling and asserted that his government is committed to providing all possible assistance to those affected.
