Cairo: Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abul-Gheit emphasized the importance of unity and vigilance in tackling the rapid and uncertain developments in the global economy during the inaugural session of the fifth Arab Development, Economic and Social Summit.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Abul-Gheit highlighted the significance of the summit given the current severe turbulences in the world economy and the emerging challenges in international commerce, including the rise of protectionism. He observed a shift towards regional integration at the expense of globalization, urging Arab states to address these challenges through collective vision and strategies, while enhancing integration and coordination in economic sectors.
Abul-Gheit underscored the necessity of this approach to safeguard Arab nations' interests amid global uncertainties and threats. He stressed the importance of food security, not just for the Arab world but globally, and called for initiatives to secure food resources for Arab citizens. The summit anticipates an Iraqi initiative on Arab food security for grains and a proposal for an Arab commerce ministers council within the League to foster cooperation and address challenges such as potential global trade wars.
The Arab League chief also mentioned the Mauritanian initiative on "Blue Economy" as a solution to food and energy shortages. The World Bank defines Blue Economy as the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and job creation while preserving ocean health. Abul-Gheit noted that this initiative would leverage Arab nations' capabilities in this field for economic and environmental benefits.
Furthermore, Abul-Gheit highlighted the Arab AI initiative as crucial for technological advancement and sustainable development, advocating for its use across sectors to bridge the technological gap between the Arab world and other nations. He emphasized that comprehensive Arab national security relies on enhanced efforts in food security, health, education, marine security, energy, cybersecurity, and social security.
He urged the Arab League to embody the founders' vision from 80 years ago and enable Arab agencies to fulfill their roles in realizing the aspirations of the Arab people. He also stressed the importance of harnessing the potential of the Arab youth, who form the majority, to serve and develop their communities.
Despite challenges such as the ongoing conflict in Palestine and external threats to Arab nations, Abul-Gheit concluded by asserting the critical need for Arab unity to overcome adversities and pursue a better future for all.
