Cairo: The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmad Abul-Gheit, on Thursday expressed strong disapproval of the United States' use of veto power against a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. According to Kuwait News Agency, Ahmad Abul-Gheit issued a press statement condemning the veto as a move that provides a green light for the continuation of the Israeli military campaign against Palestinian civilians in Gaza. He highlighted the grave humanitarian consequences, including starvation and forced displacement, associated with the ongoing conflict. Abul-Gheit emphasized that the U.S. veto illustrates a failure by the United Nations to effectively address one of the region's most pressing conflicts. He argued that this action emboldens the Israeli occupation, undermining efforts to halt the war and aligning with the Israeli far-right's plans for annexation and resettlement. The Secretary-General further noted that this marks the fourth in stance in which the U.S. has vetoed a UNSC resolution aimed at halting the conflict in Gaza. He criticized this pattern as indicative of the UNSC's inability to fulfill its role in maintaining international security and peace, which he believes weakens the overall UN system.
