Cairo: The Arab League Council has issued a strong condemnation of the Israeli occupation for violating the ceasefire agreement and resuming attacks on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, describing these actions as brutal and horrific.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the Council concluded its extraordinary meeting by adopting a resolution that condemns Israel's continued acts of aggression, genocide, and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians. The resolution calls for immediate international intervention to enforce existing legal resolutions aimed at protecting Palestinian civilians.
The resolution urges global participation in safeguarding Palestinian civilians and establishing an effective mechanism to implement United Nations resolutions for their protection. The Council highlighted Israel's ongoing violations, including 17 months of aggression, even during Ramadan, as flagrant breaches of human rights and divine laws.
The Arab League condemned Israel for its response to the Arab Summit's peace initiative, which resulted in more violence against Palestinian civilians. It warned that Israel's actions undermine prospects for a just peace based on international law and the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative.
Additionally, the resolution denounced Israeli aggression in the West Bank, including the destruction of refugee camps, forced displacement, illegal settlements, and apartheid. It rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians internally or externally and plans to annex parts of the West Bank, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the geographical and demographic unity of Palestinian territories.
It reaffirmed the right of Palestinian refugees to return, as outlined in Resolution 194 of 1948, and called on the international community to uphold this right. The resolution urged the United States to pressure Israel to cease hostilities and fulfill the phases of the ceasefire agreement, including withdrawing from Gaza.
The Arab League called on countries to support the Arab-Islamic reconstruction plan for Gaza and urged financial institutions to provide necessary support. It emphasized prosecuting Israeli officials for crimes against Palestinians and highlighted the need for international justice mechanisms.
The resolution also called for compliance with international law and cooperation with the International Criminal Court to hold Israeli war criminals accountable. It urged human rights organizations and civil society to take legal action against those responsible for Israeli aggression.
Lastly, the Council advocated for breaking the blockade on Gaza, facilitating humanitarian aid, and supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). It proposed forming a working group with Jordan, Egypt, Palestine, Qatar, and the Arab League to address the ongoing situation.
The meeting in Cairo was chaired by Yemen, with Kuwait represented by Ambassador Talal Al-Mutairi.
