Cairo: Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abul-Gheit stated on Sunday that the ongoing conflict in Sudan underscores the significant threat militias pose to national security and sovereignty, reiterating the League's firm opposition to such groups. His remarks were made during a ceremony in Cairo celebrating the "Support for Sudanese Affected by the War" initiative, a collaborative effort between the Arab League and the Sudanese Embassy.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Abul-Gheit emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the nation state, along with its legitimate leadership, government, and national army. He cautioned against the presence of entities operating outside state institutions, as they can lead to the fragmentation and weakening of states. He praised the robust ties between Egypt and Sudan, describing them as an exemplary model of deep historical connections. These ties include extensive collaboration on political, economic, and security matters, as well as joint efforts on development and water security, particularly concerning the Nile River, which is a crucial resource for both nations.
Abul-Gheit also mentioned that the shared Arab-Islamic cultural heritage serves as a unifying framework that enables both countries to tackle common challenges. On the other hand, Sudan's Ambassador to Cairo, Imad Al-Din Adawi, lauded the initiative for fostering cooperation among civil societies and advocated for its expansion to other Arab nations facing similar crises. He expressed gratitude to Egypt for its support of Sudanese initiatives and commended the efforts of volunteers from both countries.
The ceremony also included the honoring of several Egyptian, Sudanese, and Arab figures. The initiative, launched in May 2023 with the involvement of former Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and Sudanese partners, aims to support Sudanese individuals in Egypt by addressing their educational, health, social, and economic needs.
