Gaza: Several government, trade unions, and civil society organizations in Palestine have made an urgent appeal to the international community to open humanitarian corridors into the Gaza Strip. The goal is to deliver essential life-saving assistance to residents who are trapped in the ongoing conflict.
According to Kuwait News Agency, famine and acute malnutrition levels have reached unprecedented heights in the Gaza Strip, endangering thousands of lives, especially children. This was highlighted in an urgent appeal from the media office of the Gaza government. The statement emphasized that the humanitarian crisis is spiraling out of control, leaving vast numbers of people in desperate need of food and medical assistance.
Health authorities in Gaza have reported that child mortality due to malnutrition has reached 68, according to a recent press release. The rampant famine is causing hospitals across the Gaza governorates to see unprecedented numbers of people suffering from hypoglycemia-induced syncope.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has been active in providing critical services. Between July 7 and 13, UNRWA's medical teams conducted 5,400 consultations for high-risk post-natal and pregnant women, 3,126 dental and oral health consultations, and 2,087 physiotherapy rehabilitation sessions at health centers and medical points. The agency has also been conducting nutritional assessments for children aged six to 59 months. Between June 16 and 30, 10,638 children were screened for malnutrition, with over 8.5 percent showing signs of malnutrition. Since January 2024, more than 240,000 children under five have been screened, with one in 10 found to be malnourished.
In a tweet via its X account, UNRWA reported a tragic incident involving Salam, a female child under seven months old, who received emergency treatment from its health teams but sadly passed away later that day. "She is one of thousands of malnourished children in Gaza. More cases are detected every day," the agency stated in the tweet.
