Balikesir: A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the province of Balikesir in Western Turkiye Sunday, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
According to Kuwait News Agency, the AFAD stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was in the district of Sindirgi at a depth of 11 km, and occurred at 7:53 pm local time.
The earthquake caused material damage, collapsing several old buildings in Balikesir province and the surrounding villages, according to Turkish media.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said in a post on "X", that all disaster management and emergency teams, along with relevant institutions immediately began conducting field surveys.
In the past two years, two devastating earthquakes hit Turkiye, measuring 7.7 and 6.7 magnitudes, affecting 11 provinces, resulting in the death of more than 53,000 people, injuring 107,000 others, and adversely affecting the lives of 14 million citizens.
