Baghdad, US Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, Jake Sullivan, said that Washington supports the Palestinian National Authority’s restoration of its control over the Gaza Strip and opposes the forced displacement of the Strip’s population.
Sullivan stressed in a press statement on Sunday, “We also cannot return to October 6 (the situation that preceded the Hamas attack) in terms of governance (in the Gaza Strip).”
He added that this matter must depend on the Palestinian people, who will choose what their future government will look like, and it must also include the reunification of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The US President's Advisor also confirmed that Washington insists that there can be no "reoccupation of Gaza (by Israel) or forced displacement of the Palestinian people" from the territory of the Gaza Strip.
Sullivan said: “Gaza can never be used as a base for terrorism in the future. The area of Gaza should not be reduced.”
Sullivan recalled the statements of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken earlier, where he said: “We ultimately want to unify the Palestinian leadership and regain control over the West Bank and Gaza Strip. At the present time, the Palestinian National Authority assumes leadership of the West Bank.”
It should be noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced yesterday, Saturday, that the Palestinian Authority will not rule the Gaza Strip again.
