Wadi Makkah Launches ‘VISIONTHON’ Challenge to Boost Environmental Innovation through AI

Wadi makkah: The VISIONTHON technology challenge kicked off today with the aim of promoting environmental innovation and leveraging computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies to develop smart solutions for waste sorting.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the initiative was launched by Elvira Company to address challenges related to waste sorting and management, contributing to enhanced environmental sustainability. Elvira is a startup operating within the ecosystem of Wadi Makkah Company for Technology, the investment arm of Umm Al-Qura University.

VISIONTHON seeks to attract technical talent to develop practical, technology-driven solutions to real-world environmental challenges. The challenge includes two main tracks: one focusing on urban waste, including municipal and household waste, and the other targeting industrial waste, such as electronic waste and construction debris.

The initiative highlights the importance of employing advanced technologies to tackle environmental challenges, improve waste management efficiency, and increase intelligent sorting and processing rates. It also supports the technology entrepreneurship ecosystem and empowers national talents to contribute to sustainable solutions aligned with environmental development goals and the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
