Washington: The White House announced that tariffs on Chinese imports will rise to 104 percent as of Wednesday if Beijing does not retract its retaliatory decision regarding taxes imposed on US products by the end of today.
According to Kuwait News Agency, President Donald Trump plans to impose a 104-percent tariff on all Chinese imports effective Wednesday. This move follows China's decision to levy retaliatory 34 percent taxes on US imports. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt noted that the additional 50 percent tariffs would be added to the existing 34 percent imposed last week, bringing the total to 104 percent.
Leavitt emphasized that countries like China, which choose to retaliate, make a mistake by attempting to exploit American workers. She quoted Trump, asserting that he has a "spine of steel" and will not yield to pressure. She also mentioned the importance of America not being dependent on foreign countries for essential goods and resources.
In a message posted on Truth Social on Monday, Trump warned that if China does not withdraw its 34 percent tariff increase related to long-term trading issues by April 8th, 2025, the US will impose an additional 50 percent in tariffs on China, effective April 9th. He also stated that all discussions with China regarding their requested meetings would be halted.
Trump remarked that China is eager to reach an agreement but appears unsure of how to proceed. He indicated that he is awaiting China's response, while also mentioning that his administration is in talks with other countries interested in negotiating tariff agreements with the US.
