Washington: The United States condemned actions of Houthi militias who took United Nations staff members in Yemen and demanded their unconditional and immediate release.
According to Kuwait News Agency, a press release by the Department of State stated that these actions are part of the Houthis' ongoing campaign, which involves taking hundreds of UN, NGO, and diplomatic staff members. The US expressed its support for the UN Secretary General and all efforts to secure the release of all detainees held by the Houthis.
The press release described the recent detainment as indicative of the Houthi group's bad faith in their claims of seeking de-escalation and representing the interests of the Yemeni people. It also noted the group's failure to cease attacks on regional states, U.S. service members, and maritime traffic in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
Furthermore, the White House has officially declared the Houthis a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) as of last Wednesday. The press release emphasized Washington's intent to hold the group accountable for its actions and attacks.
