Washington: The US State Department announced on Tuesday that it has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Egypt, involving AN/TPS-78 Long Range Radar and associated logistics and program support, estimated at a cost of USD 304 million. This development marks a significant step in enhancing Egypt's military capabilities with advanced radar systems.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the necessary certification to Congress regarding this potential sale. Alongside the radar systems, the US State Department also approved a possible sale of Fast Missile Craft Modernization, including related logistics and program support, estimated at USD 625 million.
The statement from the department emphasized that this proposed sale aligns with US foreign policy and national security objectives, aiming to bolster the security of Egypt, a key ally in the Middle East. The sale is expected to enhance Egypt's ability to address current and future threats by boosting the tactical and operational capabilities of its navy, thereby supporting strategic maritime security goals.
Furthermore, the statement assured that Egypt would effectively integrate this equipment into its armed forces without disrupting the existing military balance in the region.
