Kuwait city: The Governments of Mexico and the United States reaffirmed on Wednesday their security cooperation, based on the principles of reciprocity, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared and differentiated responsibility, as well as mutual trust.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the aim is to work together to dismantle transnational organized crime through enhanced cooperation between the respective national security and law enforcement institutions, and judicial authorities. The joint statement on security cooperation between the United States and Mexico highlights efforts to address the illegal movement of people across the border. This cooperation through specific and immediate actions is intended to strengthen security along the shared border, halt the trafficking of fentanyl and other illicit drugs, and stop arms trafficking.
Both governments have established a high-level implementation group to regularly meet and follow-up on mutual commitments and actions within their own countries. Measures include countering cartels, strengthening border security, eliminating clandestine border tunnels, addressing illicit financial flows, enhancing collaboration to prevent fuel theft, and increasing inspections, investigations, and prosecutions to stop the flow of drugs and arms. The statement emphasized that close coordination has allowed for securing the border, reducing fentanyl trafficking, and advancing intelligence sharing, all within the respective legal frameworks.
The two governments also plan to strengthen collaboration in public health and coordinate campaigns to prevent the abuse of illicit substances and opioids. The joint statement reaffirmed both governments' determination to cooperate, protect citizens, and make communities safer.
At a joint press conference in Mexico City with Mexican Foreign Secretary Juan Ramon de la Fuente, US Secretary of State Rubio expressed satisfaction with the historic level of cooperation achieved over the past eight months. He praised the cooperation as respectful of both countries' integrity and sovereignty. Rubio acknowledged Mexico's significant role in the collaboration and stressed the importance of continued joint efforts towards shared security goals.
Rubio also mentioned the challenges faced within the United States, including increasing crime rates in cities such as Washington, D.C. He noted President Trump's focus on addressing domestic crime, including deploying federal agencies and the National Guard to ensure security and public order.
