UNSC Resolution Enhances Kuwait-Iraq Cooperation on Humanitarian Issues

New york: The UN Security Council resolution aimed at enhancing cooperation between Kuwait and Iraq on the issue of Kuwaiti prisoners and missing persons is seen as a crucial step towards addressing important national humanitarian concerns and promoting regional stability, stated Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Ambassador Tareq Al-Bannai emphasized during his speech to the UNSC that the newly adopted 2024 Resolution 2732 builds upon a series of UN resolutions dating back to the 1990s. These resolutions provide a legal framework compelling Iraq to resolve the status of Kuwaiti prisoners and missing persons and to return Kuwait's national properties.

Ambassador Al-Bannai noted that the resolution emphasizes the necessity of ongoing UN involvement in these issues even after the conclusion of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). He highlighted the importance of appointing a high-level representative to monitor these files and provide regular reports to the UNSC, ensuring objective assessment and sustained international oversight.

He further explained that progress in any of these areas contributes to building trust, which is vital for international peace and security. He acknowledged the role of the UN and the UNSC in facilitating significant advances between Kuwait and Iraq, particularly in addressing compensation matters.

Al-Bannai stressed the need for committed action from all parties, especially Iraq, to translate these resolutions into practical outcomes. He pointed out that Kuwait's relationship with Iraq not only benefits both nations but also has wider regional implications.

The ambassador reiterated Kuwait's support for Iraq in meeting its international obligations related to the pending issues with the UNSC. He affirmed that the success of Iraq equates to the success of Kuwait and the broader region.

He concluded by emphasizing Kuwait's historical commitment to justice and peace, rather than conflict, and underscored the importance of international transparency in achieving lasting and equitable results. Al-Bannai thanked member states for their roles in this initiative and reiterated Kuwait's dedication to resolving these issues to restore rights and justice for the affected families.
