UNSC Mandates High-Level Envoy for Kuwait-Iraq Cooperation

New york: The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted Resolution 2792, calling for the appointment of a high-level representative to bolster efforts concerning the return of Kuwaiti missing persons and the repatriation of Kuwaiti property, including the national archives. This resolution, drafted by the UK, was supported by all 15 council members and is aimed at reinforcing cooperation between Kuwait and Iraq, with ongoing support from the International Committee of the Red Cross.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the resolution requires the Council to reassess the necessity for continued UN oversight by December 31, 2030, or earlier if notable progress is achieved. It also emphasizes that if the fates of all Kuwaiti and third-country nationals remain unresolved by the 2030 deadline, Iraq must continue its search efforts. This includes conducting excavations at all relevant sites, leveraging technological advancements, and collaborating with UN support.

Resolution 2792 further highlights the significant international role that both Kuwait and Iraq can play by sharing expertise on missing persons and post-conflict humanitarian efforts. This aligns with the essence of UN Security Council Resolution 2474 (2019), which aimed to enhance cooperation on humanitarian issues.
