Beirut: The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon reported that its convoy was violently attacked in Beirut, resulting in a vehicle being set ablaze and injuries to its outgoing deputy commander, who was on his way home after concluding his mission.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the UN force expressed shock and condemnation over the attack, highlighting the peacekeepers’ role in restoring security and stability to southern Lebanon during challenging times. “Attacks on peacekeepers are flagrant violations of international law and may amount to war crimes. We demand a full and immediate investigation by Lebanese authorities and for all perpetrators to be brought to justice,” the UN force stated in their release. Despite the attack, the UN force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security and stability in southern Lebanon as per their mandate under Security Council resolution 1701.
Furthermore, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam denounced the assault on the UN peacekeeping forces and has ordered an invest
igation into the incident. The Lebanese government is expected to cooperate fully with UNIFIL to ensure that justice is served.
