UNHCR Warns Israeli Attacks Threaten Lebanon’s Civil and Historic Sites.

BEIRUT: The United Nations Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Saturday expressed concern at the dangerous impact of the Israeli military operations on civilians and the country's infrastructure and historic landmarks. The UNHCR, in a statement released by its Beirut office, said the Israeli attacks have been "affecting" worship places, cultural and historic landmarks. According to Kuwait News Agency, the attacks in recent days were very close to the ancient worship temple in Baalbek, classified by UNESCO as part of the global heritage. The UNHCR highlighted that buildings used for worship or those of cultural significance are considered as civil sites, and thus they are protected under international humanitarian law. Lebanon has been subjected to daily Israeli air strikes since September 23, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread damage and destruction. Many villages and towns near Baalbek, which hosts historic antiquities, have been attacked, prompting officials to express concern that the relics might be hit and demolished amid the ongoing aggression. Baalbek, located northeast of the capital in the Beqaa plain, is one of Lebanon's tourist and heritage icons and a favorite destination for the country's visitors.
