UN Sudan Envoy Holds International Community Responsible for “Atrocities, Genocide in Sudan”

Kuwait city: Sudan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, stated on Friday that the international community bears a substantial share of responsibility for what he described as the "atrocities and genocide" occurring in Sudan.

According to Kuwait News Agency, this statement was made during a special session of the UN Human Rights Council on the situation in El Fasher, held in Geneva. Ambassador Hamid warned that ignoring the crimes of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has escalated the conflict into what he termed an "existential war." He criticized attempts to equate the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) with the RSF, which he labeled as "a militia with a criminal record." He emphasized that such an approach has inadvertently provided the RSF with political and diplomatic support, referring to their actions as "terrorism."

Ambassador Hamid urged the international community to designate the Rapid Support Forces as a "terrorist group" and to address the violations happening across Sudan. He highlighted that Sudan has long warned of the dangers posed by the militia and the continuous inflow of weapons, which violate Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2736 concerning the lifting of the siege of El Fasher.

Furthermore, the ambassador noted that the international community's inaction has permitted severe abuses, including attacks on civilian infrastructure, mosques, and hospitals. The UN Human Rights Council's special session on El Fasher is expected to consider a draft resolution to establish an independent mechanism for monitoring a ceasefire and initiate an inclusive political transition. This transition aims to lead to the formation of a democratically elected civilian national government following a civilian-led transitional period.
