UN Human Rights Council’s 59th Session Commences with Kuwait’s Active Engagement

Geneva: The United Nations Human Rights Council commenced its 59th regular session in Geneva on Monday, marked by the active participation of Kuwait, represented by the Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Nasser Al-Hayen.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Ambassador Al-Hayen, who also leads the delegation of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, highlighted that Kuwait's involvement underscores its steadfast dedication to the advancement and safeguarding of human rights. He reaffirmed Kuwait's advocacy for adherence to international law and its firm stance against all human rights violations, especially in conflict areas.

Ambassador Al-Hayen voiced serious concerns regarding the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging for prompt international measures to cease Israeli hostilities and facilitate unhindered humanitarian aid access. "The systematic starvation and direct targeting of civilians in Gaza is a clear violation of international and humanitarian law," he stated. He emphasized Kuwait's proactive role in advocating for an end to the aggression and called for decisive international intervention.

Furthermore, he condemned the recent Israeli military actions against Iran, labeling them as a perilous escalation that jeopardizes international peace and stability in the region. He called for accountability in line with the UN Charter.

Kuwait is also organizing a side event titled "Humanitarian Access and Protection of Aid Workers as a Cornerstone for Promoting Human Rights," featuring contributions from UN experts and humanitarian organizations. This event aims to address the challenges faced in delivering aid during conflicts and to develop strategies for safeguarding humanitarian workers.

Ambassador Al-Hayen reaffirmed Kuwait's ongoing commitment to its responsibilities as a member of the Human Rights Council and as the leader of the GCC group, advocating for Arab and humanitarian causes while supporting international human rights initiatives.

The session is set to continue until July 9, with over 60 reports slated for examination, addressing human rights concerns in regions such as the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Syria, Sudan, and Ukraine. Key agenda topics include discussions on the right to education, genocide prevention, and violence against women.
