UN Human Rights Council’s 59th Session Commences with Active Kuwaiti Involvement

Kuwait City: The United Nations Human Rights Council inaugurated its 59th regular session in Geneva on Monday, marking the participation of Kuwait through its Permanent Representative to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Nasser Al-Hayen.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Ambassador Al-Hayen, who leads the delegation of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, highlighted that Kuwait's involvement underscores its steadfast dedication to the promotion and safeguarding of human rights. He emphasized Kuwait's advocacy for international law and its firm stance against all forms of human rights violations, especially in areas afflicted by conflict.

Ambassador Al-Hayen voiced significant concern about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging immediate international intervention to cease Israeli aggression and ensure the unobstructed delivery of humanitarian aid. He described the conditions in Gaza, including the systematic starvation and civilian targeting, as clear breaches of international and humanitarian law. He called for decisive action from the international community to halt the aggression.

Furthermore, he condemned the recent Israeli military actions against Iran, labeling them as a perilous escalation that jeopardizes international peace and security, thereby destabilizing the region. He called for accountability in alignment with the UN Charter.

Kuwait is organizing a side event entitled "Humanitarian Access and Protection of Aid Workers as a Cornerstone for Promoting Human Rights," which will involve participation from UN experts and humanitarian organizations. This event aims to discuss the challenges faced in delivering aid during conflicts and to explore strategies to safeguard humanitarian workers.

Ambassador Al-Hayen reaffirmed Kuwait's ongoing commitment to its role as a member of the Human Rights Council and as the head of the GCC group in supporting Arab and humanitarian causes, while also backing global human rights initiatives.

The session, scheduled to continue until July 9, will review over 60 reports addressing human rights issues in territories such as the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Syria, Sudan, and Ukraine. Key topics include discussions on the right to education, the prevention of genocide, and violence against women. Additionally, the Council will conduct its annual dialogue on women's rights and tackle worldwide humanitarian challenges impacting numerous nations.
