Kuwait City: The United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) for the Arabian Gulf and Kuwait organized the Sports and Environmental Day for the diplomatic corps in Kuwait on Saturday. The event, named "Kuwait Tazra," was held under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. It was attended by Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ambassador Sameeh Hayat, as well as Tajikistan Ambassador and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Kuwait Zubaydullo Zubaydzoda.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Dr. Ameera Al-Hassan, Head of the UN-Habitat Mission in Kuwait, mentioned in a press statement that the event was a celebration of Kuwait's National Days. The event also reaffirmed the commitment of the environmental campaign, now in its seventh edition since its launch in 2019, to spread environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices among all segments of society.
Attendees participated in planting local tree species, contributing to the expansion of green spaces and combating desertification. This initiative aligns with the commitment to support environmental efforts and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, in line with UN-Habitat's vision to activate the role of open public spaces.
The Ambassador of Tajikistan expressed pride in seeing the diplomatic society join such national environmental initiatives and highlighted the significance of partnership between diplomatic missions and local bodies.
Mohammad Al-Basri, Manager of Public Relations and Information Group at Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), praised the company's leading role in supporting environmental activities. He emphasized that the selection of the "Ahmadi Oasis" to host the event demonstrates a genuine commitment to sustainability issues.
Al-Basri added that the success of hosting an environmental and sports event at the Ahmadi Oasis, which is home to more than 155,000 plants and trees, provides a promising model for reforestation projects in desert areas. He hoped these efforts would help in raising environmental awareness and promoting a culture of tree planting in the community.
Kuwait Tazra stands as one of the most prominent national initiatives focused on expanding green spaces and protecting the environment.
