Baghdad: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres arrived in Baghdad Saturday on an official visit to attend the formal announcement marking the end of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
According to Kuwait News Agency, Iraq's Foreign Ministry stated in a press release that Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein received Guterres at Baghdad International Airport. Hussein expressed gratitude to the UN and UNAMI for their support during previous stages. He emphasized that the conclusion of the mission reflects Iraq's progress and stability, demonstrating its ability to manage national affairs and strengthen its sovereignty and constitutional institutions.
Guterres acknowledged the collaboration with Iraq and assured continued UN support through new frameworks tailored to the next phase. The aim is to promote sustainable development and foster international partnerships.
UNAMI, which was established in 2003 at Iraq's request, was extended for a final time by a unanimous UN Security Council vote on May 31, until December 31, 2025, at the request of the Iraqi government.
