UN chief calls for transformation of global financial system

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a transformation of the global financial system to rescue the Sustainable Development Goals.

“To rescue the Sustainable Development Goals, we need a transformation of the global financial system, so that it works for everyone and fulfils its role as a global safety net,” he told a press conference ahead of an EU-UN High-Level Dialogue in Belgium on Thursday evening.

“And I see the European Union as a potential engine for that transformation based on equity and solidarity,” he said speaking in the Chateau de la Hulpe outside Brussels.

“We live in an ever more multipolar world. This calls for enhanced forms of cooperation and multilateral governance – anchored in international law. And the European Union must be an essential pillar of this new global order,” said Guterres, a former Prime Minister of Portugal.

On her part, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen standing next to the UN chief said the EU-UN Dialogue today and tomorrow has “a packed agenda.” She announced that they will discuss four main topics: Ukraine, climate change and preparations for COP28 in the UAE, global digital transition and the increasing power of artificial intelligence, and how to re-energise global efforts to meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

“The world needs the United Nations now more than ever. I want to emphasise the European Union’s steadfast commitment to our strong partnership,” she concluded.
