UN Appoints Alakhbarov as Deputy Special Coordinator for Middle East Peace Process

Tehran: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of Ramiz Alakbarov of Azerbaijan as the new Deputy Special Coordinator and Resident Coordinator for the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. Alakbarov will also assume the role of Humanitarian Coordinator, succeeding Muhannad Hadi of Jordan, whose dedication and service have been acknowledged by the Secretary-General.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the Secretary-General expressed gratitude to Sarah Poole of the United States for her steadfast support in an ad interim capacity. Alakbarov brings over 30 years of international experience in executive leadership, strategic planning and policy-making, development programming and management, and humanitarian response.

Alakbarov has been serving as the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia since 2023. Before this, he was the Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), where he also held the position of United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator from 2021 to 2023.
