UK to Develop AI-Powered Crime Forecasting Technology

London: The UK government has unveiled a new initiative aimed at developing AI-powered technology to predict and prevent crime. The project will create an interactive crime map for England and Wales, utilizing data from police, councils, and social services to identify potential crime locations and detect early signs of anti-social behavior.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced that teams from business, universities, and other sectors will collaborate under the Concentrations of Crime Data Challenge. This initiative is part of the government's sterling pounds 500 million (approx USD 680 million) R and D Missions Accelerator Programme, with a target to have a fully operational system by 2030.

An initial investment of 4 million sterling pounds (approx USD eight million) is allocated to support the development of prototypes, expected by April 2026. The technology will focus on crimes that impact public safety, including theft, anti-social behavior, knife crime, and violent crime. The government's goal is to reduce knife crime and violence against women and girls by half within the next decade.

Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle stated that the initiative aims to equip police with the necessary intelligence to prevent crime proactively. The project is an extension of existing Home Office efforts, such as mapping knife crime hotspots and the Safer Streets Initiative.
