The UK is sending additional emergency humanitarian aid for the displaced from Lebanon to Syria, worth GBP 3 million (USD 3.887 million), allocated to provide health care and save lives through reliable humanitarian organizations, announced the British Foreign Office in a statement on Wednesday. British Minister of State for Development Anneliese Dodds said, "the humanitarian situation in Lebanon and the wider Middle East is extremely concerning, it is critical that vulnerable civilians fleeing the conflict in Lebanon are given safe passage, and for their lives to be protected." She added that the package of emergency assistance is to support the people risking their lives to make the dangerous journey. The statement explained that of the GBP 3 million in funding, GBP 2 million (USD 2.590 dollars) has been allocated to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Syria, with GBP 500,000 given to both the International Medical Corps UK and UNFPA. The UN estimates that more than 400,0 00 people have fled Lebanon to Syria since last September, most of them Syrian women and children who were displaced to Lebanon as a result of the civil war in Syria that broke out in 2014. The United Kingdom has provided aid to Syria worth GBP 4 billion (USD 5.178 billion) in lifesaving and life-sustaining assistance for the victims of the crisis since the war broke out there in 2011.
