UK and Australia Forge Historic Submarine Industry Treaty

Geelong: The United Kingdom and Australia signed a significant treaty on Saturday to collaborate in the production of nuclear-powered submarines. This strategic partnership marks a pivotal moment in the defense relations between the two nations.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the treaty was formalized by Richard Marles, Australia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, and John Healey, the UK's Secretary of State for Defence, in the Australian city of Geelong. The landmark agreement underscores a 50-year commitment to UK-Australian bilateral cooperation under the AUKUS Pillar I, which focuses on the acquisition and development of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines for the Royal Australian Navy.

The treaty is a testament to the robust trilateral cooperation between Australia, the UK, and the United States, furthering the shared objectives of the AUKUS partnership. It aligns with the international nuclear non-proliferation obligations, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty, and Australia's agreements with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In conjunction with the AUKUS Naval Nuclear Propulsion Agreement (ANNPA), this treaty aims to deliver advanced undersea capabilities to support stability and security in both the Euro Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions. It promises to drive defense-related economic growth, create thousands of jobs, and provide new opportunities for industry partners across the two nations.

Additionally, the statement highlighted a meeting held on 25 July 2025, where Australia's Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, and UK counterparts David Lammy and John Healey engaged in Australia-UK Ministerial Consultations (AUKMIN) in Sydney. The ministers acknowledged the increasingly perilous global security environment since their last meeting in December 2024 and emphasized the importance of their enduring relationship in addressing these challenges.

The discussions concluded with an agreement to enhance cooperation in defense, national security, economic security, and climate change mitigation, reinforcing the significance of the UK-Australia alliance in fostering economic growth globally.
