UK Allocates GBP 8.5 Million for Humanitarian Aid in Gaza

London: In a significant move, the UK government has announced an additional GBP 8.5 million in humanitarian aid aimed at addressing the dire needs in the Gaza Strip, urging Israeli authorities to reconsider their plans to reoccupy the area. This funding is designated to aid the humanitarian response through the UN's OCHA Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) Humanitarian Fund, focusing on providing essential resources such as food, water, and fuel to the most affected regions.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the UK Foreign Office revealed that the support channeled through OCHA has been crucial in delivering healthcare, food, and cash assistance to over 750,000 Palestinians amidst ongoing conflict. OCHA's efforts, which include providing fuel for hospitals and essential medicines, have reached nearly 1 million people. However, the UN agency reports facing systematic obstructions, hindering their ability to deliver aid effectively.

Jenny Chapman, the UK's Minister for International Development, emphasized the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and called for a return to ceasefire agreements to alleviate suffering and secure the release of hostages. She criticized the current restrictions at the border that prevent the flow of aid, stressing the UK's readiness to increase support through its partners and urging Israel to facilitate the safe and secure entry of aid.

Chapman highlighted the UK's commitment to supporting the UN and other humanitarian partners working under challenging conditions. She noted that the recent funding announcement is contingent on Israel permitting the unimpeded delivery of aid to Gaza. Furthermore, Chapman pointed out the UK's position as the largest donor to the UN OCHA pool fund in 2025, reflecting its dedication to mitigating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The UK has allocated GBP 101 million for the OPTs for the current financial year, with GBP 60 million earmarked for lifesaving humanitarian efforts. Beyond relief efforts, UK funding also supports Palestinian economic development and governance reforms. The UK government continues to advocate for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and an urgent increase in aid to Gaza.
