Washington: U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson announced late Friday that he will not call House lawmakers back to sessions until the ongoing 10-day government shutdown is resolved. Johnson emphasized that the resumption of legislative sessions hinges on Senate Democrats ceasing their blockade of government finance legislation.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Johnson addressed reporters at the Capitol, attributing the prolonged government shutdown to Senate Democrats, who have blocked the government finance legislation for the seventh time in two weeks. Johnson stated, "We will come back, and get back to legislative sessions, as soon as the Senate Democrats turn the lights back on."
Johnson's decision to halt house sessions is aimed at increasing pressure on Senate Democrats to endorse the GOP-led stopgap spending bill, which was successfully passed by the House last month. The speaker's stance underscores the political standoff between the two parties as the shutdown continues.
