Washington: President Donald J. Trump announced that eight European countries, namely Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, will face 10 percent tariffs on their exports to the United States starting February 1. The tariffs are set to increase to 25 percent on June 1, contingent upon reaching a deal for the acquisition of Greenland.
According to Kuwait News Agency, President Trump expressed his stance on his Truth Social platform, emphasizing the historical context of the relationship between the United States and Denmark, as well as other European nations. Trump highlighted that these countries have benefited from the lack of tariffs and other forms of financial compensation over the years. He suggested that the strategic significance of Greenland, especially in the face of interest from China and Russia, justifies the United States' position in acquiring it.
President Trump underscored the importance of Greenland for global security, pointing out the inadequacy of Denmark's current defense capabilities. He reiterated that only the United States, under his leadership, can effectively secure the region. Trump raised concerns about the unspecified activities of several European countries in Greenland, labeling the situation as a potential threat to global peace and stability.
The tariff imposition is framed as a move to protect global peace and security, with Trump asserting that the situation demands strong measures. He stated that the tariffs will remain in place until an agreement is reached for the purchase of Greenland, a transaction that the United States has pursued for over 150 years.
President Trump further elaborated on the strategic necessity of acquiring Greenland, citing the advanced security programs related to "The Dome." He noted that the inclusion of Greenland is crucial for the optimal performance of these defense systems, which also relate to the protection of Canada. Trump extended an open invitation for negotiations with Denmark and the other involved countries, emphasizing the long-standing support and protection the United States has provided them.
