Washington: President Donald J. Trump announced a significant tariff on Brazilian products in a letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Effective August 1, 2025, the U.S. will impose a 50 percent tariff on all goods imported from Brazil, as stated by President Trump.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the decision was framed within a broader critique of Brazil's handling of former President Jair Bolsonaro's trial. Trump described the trial as an "international disgrace" and a "Witch Hunt" that should cease immediately. He further criticized Brazil's actions against free elections and free speech, particularly pointing to the Brazilian Supreme Court's censorship orders on U.S. social media platforms.
The letter also addressed longstanding trade issues between the two countries. Trump highlighted the perceived unfairness of Brazil's trade policies and barriers, calling for a move away from the current trade relationship. He emphasized that the 50 percent tariff aims to rectify these imbalances, though he noted that the tariff would not apply if Brazilian companies choose to manufacture within the United States. Trump assured that the U.S. would expedite any necessary approvals for such initiatives.
