Washington: US President Donald Trump described a Supreme Court ruling invalidating tariffs he imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) as "disgraceful," asserting he has "stronger alternatives" and announcing plans to introduce a 10 percent global tariff under a different legal authority. According to Kuwait News Agency, Trump, speaking at a press conference at the White House, expressed disappointment with the court's decision, labeling it "a shame for our nation." He criticized the justices who supported the ruling as "unpatriotic and disloyal to the Constitution" and alleged they were influenced by foreign interests and underestimated political movements. The US Supreme Court's 6-3 ruling determined that Trump's use of IEEPA to impose tariffs on most US trading partners was unlawful, effectively nullifying the tariffs enacted under the emergency powers law. Trump emphasized that alternative legal authorities, which the court recognized, remain available to him. He highlighte d that national security-related tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act and measures under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 would continue to be enforced. The President stated, "Effective immediately, all national security-related tariffs under Section 232 and existing tariffs under Section 301, which are already in place, will remain fully effective." Furthermore, Trump announced his intention to sign an order for a global 10 percent tariff under Section 122, designed to address balance-of-payments issues temporarily. He also revealed plans to launch new investigations under Section 301 and other authorities to combat unfair trade practices by other nations and companies. Trump reiterated his view that tariffs are vital for the US economy, amid concerns about the potential impact of the court's decision on his emergency-based measures.
