Washington: US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he held his first phone call with Colombian President Gustavo Petro to discuss drug-related issues and bilateral relations. Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that it was "a great honor" to speak with President Petro, who reached out to address drug-related matters and other disputes existing between the two nations.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Trump mentioned that coordination is underway between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Colombian Foreign Minister Rosa Villavicencio to arrange a meeting between the two presidents in the near future. He expressed his appreciation for President Petro's call and expressed his hope to meet the Colombian leader soon, extending an invitation to visit Washington and the White House.
President Petro issued a presidential statement on Colombian state television, describing the call as "friendly." He emphasized the need to open communication channels with Washington to resolve bilateral differences. Petro stressed the significance of this step in preventing tensions between the two countries and affirmed Bogota's readiness to cooperate with the Trump administration, particularly in combating drug trafficking.
