The Turkish President signs the protocol on Sweden’s accession to NATO

Istanbul – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed on Monday the protocol for Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The Turkish Presidency’s Communications Department stated on its social media account that the protocol was referred to Parliament after it was signed by President Erdogan for a vote on it before its official adoption.

In mid-July, the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, hosted a tripartite meeting that included Turkish President Erdogan, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

Following the meeting, a tripartite statement confirmed that Ankara will refer Sweden’s NATO accession protocol to Parliament for ratification, and that Stockholm will support efforts to revive Turkey’s accession process to the European Union.

It added that it will be voted on in the next session of the Turkish Parliament.

It is noteworthy that Turkey had prevented Sweden from joining NATO due to its non-compliance with the protocol signed between it and Turkey regarding preventing anti-Turkish organizations from operating on its territory, and at the forefront of these organizations is the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

All 31 NATO allies must support Sweden’s membership, but Turkey and Hungary have not yet ratified Stockholm’s application to join./End
