Speaker supports call to check social media misuse, misinformation

Vienna, Sept. 9 (BNA): Council of Representatives Speaker Fawzia bint Abdullah Zainal has expressed support for a proposal to form a parliamentary committee to ensure that social media platforms are not misused, particularly that abuse is a major concern affecting all Arab countries, especially the Arabian Gulf countries.

The proposal was put forward by Kuwaiti National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Ali Al Ghanim as he addressed the fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Vienna.

“We join the countries that call for legislation to verify the information on social media in order to ensure its authenticity and the reliability of its sources before it is disseminated. We need to protect the cohesion of our societies,” Zainal told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

The Speaker highlighted Bahrain’s efforts in combating abuses on social media and stressed that the Kingdom’s approach is to enact and enforce legislation and laws that protect information, ensure the reliability and credibility of sources, avoid misinformation and disinformation and focus on correct and credible information only.
