Spain Summons Israeli Official Over Interception of Freedom Flotilla Vessel

Madrid: Spain’s Foreign Ministry summoned Israeli occupation’s charge d’affaires in Madrid on Monday to protest the detention of Spanish activist Sergio Toribio, taken when Israeli forces intercepted the Freedom Flotilla vessel “Madleen” in international Mediterranean waters. The vessel was carrying 12 people and humanitarian aid to Gaza to break the humanitarian blockade.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the ministry-without an Israeli ambassador since Spain recognized Palestine on 28 May 2024-stated it is coordinating with Toribio, his family, and Israeli officials to provide consular protection. The incident has raised diplomatic tensions between Spain and Israel, as efforts are underway to ensure the safety and release of the activist.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition reported that the crew was unarmed and its aid cargo was seized during the interception. The organization has been active in challenging the blockade on Gaza by attempting to deliver humanitarian aid through international waters. The latest interception is part of ongoing efforts by Israeli forces to prevent such flotillas from reaching their destination.
