Kuwait city: Today marks several significant events in Kuwait's history that have shaped the nation's legacy and global standing. These events highlight both challenges and achievements that the country has navigated over the years.
According to Kuwait News Agency, in 1990, the Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah delivered a crucial address to the Kuwaiti people and the international community amid the Iraqi invasion and occupation of Kuwait. He emphasized the necessity of ending the occupation through the full implementation of international, Arab, and Islamic resolutions, expressing hope with his statement, "The sun of liberation will soon shine on the land of Kuwait and the invaders will be defeated."
In 2005, a significant development occurred when the State of Kuwait secured the release of five citizens from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, with six others remaining at the offshore prison at that time. This marked a pivotal moment in the country's diplomatic efforts.
The year 2008 saw a boost in financial security when Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah signed a law guaranteeing deposits at local banks, ensuring economic stability and confidence in the banking sector.
Kuwait SC achieved remarkable success in Asian football by winning the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup twice. In 2009, they defeated Syria's Al-Karamah SC with a score of 2-1 in a match held in Kuwait, and in 2012, they triumphed over Irbil SC with a 4-0 victory in the final held in Irbil, Iraq.
In 2014, the Kuwait Government unveiled the slogan "Humanitarian Leader" for national celebrations in 2015. This followed the United Nations' recognition of Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah as a Humanitarian Leader and Kuwait as a Humanitarian Center, reflecting the country's commitment to humanitarian efforts.
Further showcasing Kuwait's excellence, Yousef Al-Abdulrazzaq topped the Aquabike World Championship (UIM) rankings in 2016, outpacing over 200 competitors. That same year, Kuwait achieved significant success at the Cairo Art and Media Mondial, winning 35 awards and claiming the top spot in the competition.
Most recently, in 2022, the Environment Public Authority inaugurated the Jahra Natural Reserve, highlighting Kuwait's ongoing commitment to environmental preservation and sustainability.
