The Foreign Affairs, Defense, and National Security Committee at the Shura Council chaired by Ali bin Mohammad Al Romaihi has lauded the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s announcement that hunger-striking inmates at the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre (Jau) had ended their hunger strike on September 11 after the actual beginning of the development of the services delivered to them.
The committee expressed appreciation for the professional, human rights, and humanitarian role played by the NIHR, as stipulated in Law (26) of 2014 on its establishment, which gave it the mandate to achieve its goals with complete independence and transparency, in accordance with the Paris Principles relating to the status of national institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights, ratified by United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. (48/134) issued on December 20, 1993.
The panel expressed appreciation for the professionalism of the national mechanisms, such as the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission (PDRC), Ombudswomen Office, and the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), which demonstrated the effectiveness of national human rights work derived from the National Action Charter and the Constitution of Bahrain, in line with the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
The Foreign Affairs, Defense, and National Security Committee at the Shura Council affirmed its support for any necessary legislative review that contributes to the advancement of human rights work in Bahrain, which would support and enhance the vital role of national human rights mechanisms, all in accordance with the principle of cooperation among all branches, stipulated in the Constitution.
