Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Honored with Japan’s Top National Decoration

Tokyo: Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah has been awarded Japan's highest national decoration, the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, by Emperor Naruhito. The prestigious decoration ceremony was held at the Matsu-no-Ma State Hall of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the Order of the Rising Sun was established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji as Japan's first national order. The order is represented by an insignia that features rays of sunlight radiating from the rising sun, symbolizing Japan. It recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in international relations, the promotion of Japanese culture, or excelled in their respective fields. The order also acknowledges efforts towards social and professional prosperity or environmental conservation.

Initially awarded to non-Japanese recipients since 1981, the Order of the Rising Sun was made eligible for women in 2003. The order, administered by the Decorations Bureau under the Cabinet Office, is conferred in the name of the Emperor and can be awarded posthumously. It consists of eight classes, with the Grand Cordon being the highest. This class has been awarded to several international figures including former US Vice President Dick Cheney, former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, among others.
